Kara was born to Carol Asselta and Joseph J. DioGuardi a former Republican Congressman. Kara grew up in the suburban New Rochelle, New York. She attended The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, New York and then went ahead to Duke University, from where she earned a degree in political science.

After completing her studies at Duke University, she started working for Billboard magazine. Ever since her childhood, Kara had shown interest in music, but could follow her dream only after she was on her own. While she was working at Billboard, she learnt a lot about business, which proved to be first stepping stone for her in the world of glamour.

Kara always wanted to make it big in this world. Following her dream today she co-owns Arthouse Entertainment, a publishing company that is a resource business for record companies and other music entities seeking compositions, productions, artists, and related music services.

of her works and immediately afterwards she flew with her to Los Angeles to work with her. Kara had written a number of songs, but commercial success came to her only after collaborating with Paula Abdul. Their first song “Spinning Around” was a huge success, which was performed by Kylie Minogue. After this success Kara found herself on a completely different scale.

In 2006, Kara made her debut with reality television by becoming a judge on TV show called “The One: Making a Music Star”. In 2009, she became the fourth judge on the eighth season of “American Idol” , joining the others Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul.
